Measure before changing anything
Use the device storage view to separate photos, video, downloads, installed apps, messages, and system data. Note the free space and the two largest categories. Restart once if the totals look wrong; cached storage summaries can lag behind recent changes.
Start with reversible choices
- Remove completed downloads that can be downloaded again.
- Delete offline copies from streaming apps without deleting the account library.
- Uninstall unused large apps while retaining their cloud account only if you know the data is synced.
- Move verified photo and video originals to independent backup storage before using space-optimization features.
Review duplicates as groups
Files with similar images are not necessarily duplicates. Burst photos, edits, screenshots, and resized exports may look alike but serve different purposes. Compare resolution, date, duration, edits, and album membership before choosing a keeper.
For documents, compare contents rather than names alone. Two files named ‘scan.pdf’ can contain entirely different records.
Verify the result and the recovery window
- Open the recently deleted or trash area and confirm how long items remain recoverable.
- Check important albums, downloads, and app attachments after cleanup.
- Restart the device and confirm the expected free space was reclaimed.
- Empty trash only after the backup and remaining library have been checked.
