How to choose an ad blocker without trusting the marketing

Start with the permissions, not the star rating

Browser blockers need meaningful access to inspect or modify web requests. That access can be legitimate, but it also creates responsibility. Read the browser permission prompt and the product privacy page together. Look for a clear explanation of which data stays on the device, which events leave it, and whether an account is required.

A vague statement such as ‘we value privacy’ is weaker than a specific description of telemetry, diagnostics, filter updates, and support data. If the policy does not match the permissions, pause before installing.

Test several kinds of blocking

A single blocked banner proves very little. Advertising scripts, tracking pixels, analytics calls, social widgets, and page overlays behave differently. Test more than one category and repeat the check after restarting the browser so you know the extension is active consistently.

• Network blocking: requests are stopped before the resource loads.
• Cosmetic filtering: empty ad spaces and page clutter are hidden.
• Tracking protection: known analytics and pixel endpoints are restricted.
• First-party controls: the blocker explains what it can and cannot stop on the site you are visiting.

Plan for broken pages

Aggressive filtering can interfere with sign-in screens, payment forms, video players, or consent controls. A good blocker makes the exception temporary and visible: pause it for the current site, reload, finish the task, and turn protection back on. Avoid extensions that make allow-list changes difficult to find or impossible to reverse.

Keep a second browser profile with no extensions for high-stakes troubleshooting. If a page fails in both profiles, the blocker probably is not the cause.

Use a short decision checklist

• The publisher identifies itself and provides a working support route.
• The privacy policy describes data handling in concrete language.
• The extension offers per-site controls and an obvious on/off state.
• Independent tests cover several request types, not just one dramatic demo.
• The product is maintained for the browser you actually use.
